Yes

No, not yet

I don't know

Hey, how are you?

Great! So, I'm Aeren, 28, live in Barnet. I was born with a learning disability, it’s a rare condition - the short version is that it’s a chromosome abnormality. Other than that, I’m just like anyone else.

But let's get started, what do you think a learning disability is?

So, let's do this. First things first, what's a learning disability?

Not quite, dyslexia is a 'learning difficulty' as it doesn't affect intellect.

And mental health problems are things like depression and anxiety, which can be treatable, and can happen to anyone at anytime...

A learning disability is...

Bingo.

A learning disability is reduced intellectual ability that lasts a lifetime.

But lots of people confuse it with things like dyslexia, which is a 'learning difficulty' as it doesn't affect intellect.

And mental health problems are things like depression and anxiety, which can be treatable, and can happen to anyone at anytime…

A reduced intellectual ability that lasts a lifetime.

That's why I'm here!

I didn’t eat enough carrots as a child

Sorry

A learning disability happens when the brain is still developing. Before, during or after birth - sometimes from a lack of oxygen

There are no types of learning disability. You might have heard of the conditions Down's syndrome or Williams syndrome

But lots of things can cause a learning disability and people shouldn't be defined by it, or seen as a type.

In the same way someone shouldn't be defined by being shy, or brunette, or... um, Welsh.

Pretty much like you'd treat anyone else

You might have to be a bit patient, because it might take us longer to work things out.

But just because I might not be great on Mastermind, doesn't mean I'm not good at other stuff

Personally, not at all. I love to give advice to parents whose kids have learning disabilities, or anyone who wants to learn more

I work for Mencap in Barnet, so I have to do it quite a lot

Mencap is a charity that wants to help people with a learning disability live their lives in the way they want to.

They run projects to help people find jobs, support people with daily tasks if they need it, and even organise sports and social activities…

All sorts of things, but overall – they want to help people with learning disabilities live their lives in the way they want to

So they run projects to help people find jobs, suppport people with daily tasks if they need it, and even organise sports and social activities...

They also lobby the government for change

Despite things coming a long way, they are nowhere near perfect. People with a learning disability are often invisible and not included in society.

For example, guess how many people in the UK have a learning disability?

Actually, it's more... 1.4 million

And out of those people, 65% are able to work...

Around 65% want to work.

But guess how many actually do work?

Not quite

Only 6% are known to be in paid work

Yep total horror show

Yeah, it’s not good! Inclusion is our biggest battle, and it’s what we’re really really fighting for. But the first step to inclusion is understanding.

And it's what we're really fighting for.

But the first step to inclusion is understanding.

So now we’ve got some of the basic stuff out of the way, let’s get to the more interesting questions. Ask the ones that interest you, skip the ones that don't, and if you've had enough, just say!

Let's chat about some of the stuff you've always wondered...

Questions that you'd either be too embarrased to ask

Or might ask, but at times when you should probably be focusing on something else... Ready?

Well, I'm from a Catholic family... so... you know

But of course, you can definitely have sex if you have a learning disability!! As long as you trust the person and you’re not in a vulnerable situation - like anyone else.

Right now I like being single because all the boys I know remind me of my dad.

Yeah I like a party

I'm from an Irish family so I don’t mind the odd drink. I like Jack Daniel's and coke, or vodka, and beer… and cider… but apple, definitely not pear. BUT!!!

As long as it’s done in a responsible way

No.

Well… there’s one thing…

Snoring… I snore because my airways are quite small and I breathe through my mouth. It’s quite embarrassing.

No, not necessarily. Parents may not realise that their kids have one… or might not want them to be labelled because they’re scared

I kind of worked it out for myself, because I was very slow at mainstream school, and had to go back a year. Our doctor gave us a sheet of paper about my condition and that's all the support we got.

Yes people with learning disabilities can have kids and it does not necessarily mean that they will have learning disabilities

I know in the future I definitely want kids, maybe two or three.

My sister, Einstein… and…

Jennifer Aniston

But I wouldn’t cook. I’m really really bad at cooking. Seriously, I once burnt soup.

And don’t worry, we won’t stalk you, or send 10 emails every day.
