Mencap support communities across England, Wales and Northern Ireland
We are reaching out to communities to let them know we want to help make the UK the best place for people with a learning disability A learning disability is to do with the way someone's brain works. It makes it harder for someone to learn, understand or do things. to live happy and healthy lives.
Our starting point is that all communities have strengths, all citizens have power, and we want to build on this together!
Mencap are partnering with local people to harness community power
We know we can’t achieve the Mencap vision 'to help make the UK the best place for people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives' alone, and that we are better together.
Mencap are working in a community-led and asset-based way
Working in a community-led way
Being community A community is the people and places in an area. -led means that local people hold the power (and have freedom) to change their communities.
People with a learning disability lead the way, telling us what’s important to them. Instead of us finding ideas to local challenges that communities are facing, we stand behind them as they find their own solutions.
Each community we support in this way helps us take a step closer to helping make the UK the best place for people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives.
Working in an asset-based way
Being asset-based means that we believe all communities have strengths and all citizens have power.
We work with local people to understand the great things about their community, and build on that together.
‘Assets’ or strengths are anything from places and services, to individuals and networks.
