Safeguarding

People with a learning disability deserve to live their lives in safety.

At Mencap this means ensuring that they maintain choice and control over their lives.

What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding is making sure people are safe from abuse, ill treatment, neglect or exploitation.

Our approach to safeguarding

Mencap have an obligation to keep the people with a learning disability that we support and work with, safe.

This means ensuring that they maintain choice and control over their lives, and feel safe when they do so, including adults as well as all children and young people aged under 18 years old.

A supporters guide and Easy Read resources to help understand safeguarding

We have made two "Let's Talk About safeguarding" Easy Reads which are designed to help someone with a learning disability understand safeguarding and what to do if they, or someone else, are being abused or neglected.

For anyone that may need a little more support with these Easy Reads, we have also created a guide for supporters.
