About the Big Public Transport Survey
Mencap has received a grant from the Motability Foundation on a research Research is a way of finding out information which could come from books, or asking people what they think. project about public transport.
The Motability Foundation fund, support, research and innovate To innovate means to come up with new ideas or ways of doing things. so that all disabled people can make the journeys they choose.
We are inviting people with a learning disability A learning disability is to do with the way someone's brain works. It makes it harder for someone to learn, understand or do things. to take part in our Big Public Transport Survey A survey is when someone asks you to answer some questions. .
We will ask thousands of people with a learning disability what they think about public transport, health, work and community A community is the people and places in an area. .
We then work with the government and other organisations Organisations are groups like companies and businesses. to make change happen.

We would like to ask you some questions about you and your experiences using public transport. There are questions on other topics too, such as wellbeing, community and work.
We will be asking lots of people to fill in the survey.
You can take part in the survey if you are an adult with a learning disability and live in the UK.
Yes. You might need somebody to help you read the survey and answer the questions. You can ask a support worker Support workers Support workers are people who are paid to give care and support to people who need it. are people who are paid to give care and support to people who need it. , carer, family member, friend or somebody else to help you.

This will be a chance for you to tell us about your life and experiences. We will be asking questions about public transport, and other topics such as wellbeing, community and work.
The results will help Mencap to provide better support for people with a learning disability. We will use your answers to help make life better for people with a learning disability.
We asked a group of people with a learning disability to help us design the Big Public Transport Survey. We talked to them about what is important to ask people with a learning disability.
They worked with us to choose which questions to have in the survey and make the survey more easy to understand. They worked with us to choose which pictures to use.
We have a person with a learning disability working in the Research team on the Big Public Transport Survey.
Other team members from Mencap helped us to design the survey too.
We also got ideas from other surveys.
We found that lots of surveys for the general public are not accessible for people with a learning disability. So we did not include many questions from general public surveys in the Big Public Transport Survey.
Yes. We tested the survey with other people with a learning disability.
This was to check if people understood the questions. We made some changes to the Big Public Transport Survey based on what they told us.
We will write a report about what we find out. We will share the report with other organisations. We will also share the report on our website A website is a page you can go to on the internet like Google or YouTube. and social media (things like Instagram and Facebook).
No. We will not use your name in the report. Your answers to this survey are confidential Confidential means something is private. . This means that we will not use your name when we share what we have found out.
No. You don’t have to take part in the survey if you don’t want to. If you change your mind during the survey, you can stop.
You will tell us if you want to take part. You can then answer the Big Public Transport Survey questions.
Or if you don’t want to take part then nothing more will happen.
We will contact lots of different people. For example, we will contact organisations, groups and services who work with people with a learning disability in the UK.
We will also share the survey with local councils.
We will try to find ways to contact people who don’t use services too.
