Launceston is an old market town in North Cornwall, just over the Devon border.
Mencap’s supported living service enables adults with a learning disability to live independently in their own homes. Instead of moving into residential care, individuals rent or own their own property while receiving tailored, flexible staff support to help them manage their tenancies and daily lives.
How Mencap supported living works
Individuals either live by themselves or share a property with others. They have their own
tenancy agreement
A Tenancy agreement is where the person renting a house, and the person who owns the house, agree on things like how much rent to pay, who will mend things like the cooker if they go wrong, and whether you are allowed pets.
or mortgage, providing the same legal

and security as anyone else living in the community.
The support: Staff assist based on individual needs and goals. This can range from a few hours of drop-in help each week to 24-hour care, including overnight or sleep-in assistance.
Support is adapted to what the person wants and needs. It typically includes learning, or assisting with:
- Personal care (e.g., getting dressed, bathing)
- Household chores like cooking, laundry, and cleaning
- Managing bills, budgeting, and claiming benefits
- Taking medication and managing doctor or dentist appointments
- Engaging in the community, leisure activities, and building social
relationships
Relationships are about the people in your life. You might have different types of relationships like friendships, family relationships, or a boyfriend or girlfriend.
.
Supported living vs. residential care
The main difference between these two services are the individual's living situation and rights. In residential care, the person lives in a
care home
A care home is a place where people who need support live. There are staff there all the time.
managed and owned by the care provider. In supported living with Mencap, the person lives in their own home, holds the tenancy, and receives care as a separate service.
Helpful resources
If a person requires support with personal care (e.g. washing, bathing or cleaning themselves, getting dressed or going to the toilet), then this support is regulated by The Care Quality Commission (CQC).
The CQC rates each service as either Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement or Inadequate.
