This month we want to thank and celebrate everyone who took part in One Big Walk. It has been a September to remember! There is lots to celebrate!

We were honoured to welcome Elly Downes, granddaughter of Mencap’s founder Judy Fryd, along with her children. Their participation brought a beautiful sense of continuity and legacy to the event - proof that Judy’s vision continues to inspire across generations.

Our annual charity walk is for everyone

Throughout September, walkers shared their progress in our WhatsApp group, posting updates from health apps and fitness trackers.

The commitment was incredible:

  • Karen walked an astonishing 150 miles, maintaining a 21-day streak and racking up 348,851 steps!
  • Marjory not only walked 164 miles but also doubled her fundraising target.
  • Maria and her family took on the scenic challenge of Bix Hill in Surrey, making memories along the way.
  • We had another family team, Callum and Arabella who went on so many beautiful walks.
  • Martin shared some wonderful photos and made sure to promote One Big Walk on his social media.

Whether walking with family, friends, or furry companions, every step counted - and every story was inspiring. It was so lovely to see what a kind and supportive community was formed on the group chat, and how One Big Walk not only got people outside and active. But also got people creating and strengthening relationships by walking together both virtually and in person!

Lots of companies also walked for Mencap

  • Ruby and her team from Solving Homes, a supported living company for adults with learning disabilities, raised an incredible £1,442.
  • Prayer Reign Ministries hosted their own One Big Walk in Regent’s Park, bringing their community together.

We had support from lots of organisations both existing supporters continuing to be wonderful, and new supporters joining Team Mencap.

Our staff showed up in full force! And both the London and Peterborough Mencap office took on fantastic walks.

A special shout-out to the Quality Team, who raised £420 as a group. Your teamwork and dedication were outstanding.

From heartfelt stories to impressive step counts, One Big Walk was more than just a fundraiser - it was a celebration of community, movement, and shared purpose.

Thank you for walking with us, cheering each other on, and making a real difference.

Thank you for completing One Big Walk

Our Supporter Care Team have been busy handwriting thank you cards that will be sent to every one that walked, wheeled and pushed through their challenge while fundraising to support our work at Mencap.
