The LD week theme ‘Do you see me?’ challenges us all to stop and think: Do you really see people with a learning disability for who they are, what they can do, and what they can lead?

During National Learning Disability Week Mencap Sport and the Leadership and Skills Foundation started a pilot leadership award— the LD week theme ‘Do you see me?’ challenges us all to stop and think: Do you really see people with a learning disability for who they are, what they can do, and what they can lead?
The Sport Team believe leadership should be genuinely inclusive. That’s why we’re proud to be working in partnership with the Leadership Skills Foundation to create meaningful sport and physical activity leadership opportunities for people with a learning disability.
Together, we are working to ensure the Go Lead award is accessible , inclusive, and designed with people with a learning disability at its heart. This includes adapting content into easy read formats and working alongside participants to test and shape the experience . Great thanks to Nottingham MeTime and Sports Connect for being involved in the pilot programme.

The partnership is about more than participation—it’s about visibility, voice, and leadership.

People with a learning disability should not just be part of activity—they should be leading it. Leadership builds confidence, develops essential skills, creates role models, and opens up pathways into volunteering, employment , and influencing their communities.
Through this partnership, we are:
Creating routes into leadership
Supporting people to step forward as tutors and role models
Breaking down barriers so leadership is accessible to everyone
Looking ahead, the Go Lead award brings exciting opportunities to grow this work—supporting more people with a learning disability to be seen, heard, and recognised as leaders.
