Frequently asked questions and answers
Still have questions? Lets talk!
You can contact the Community Fundraising Team on firstname.lastname@example.org and 020 7696 6949 and your local fundraising manager will get in touch as soon as they can.
Can I fundraise online?
Most certainly! You can find Mencap on Virgin Money Giving. Have a look, it is really easy to set up your own fundraising page.
Virgin Money Giving collects Gift Aid on your behalf and manages all the administration, so it’s less hassle for you, and less cost to Mencap. The funds reach Mencap approximately 2 weeks after the donation is made and go straight to your account with Mencap.
How do I send you the funds I raised?
There are two ways to pay in the funds you raised at an event:
- Take the funds you raised to the bank. If you need a pay-in slip, please contact us and we’ll send you one.
- You can also send a cheque for the total amount, payable to Mencap, to: Mencap Events Team, 123 Golden Lane, EC1Y 0RT. Don’t forget to include your name and address.
- You can also donate to us online but make sure you leave a message on how you have raised the money for Mencap.
What support do you provide?
We have materials such as collection tins and buckets, balloons and T-shirts. We’re always happy to chat about your plans. The more we know about your event, the more we can help!
How does the charity spend its money?
From every £1 raised, 97% is spent on charitable activity. That includes providing services, such as the Mencap Direct helpline and advocacy services, and campaigning.
Everything we do is about supporting and giving a voice to people with a learning disability, their families and carers across the UK.
How can I make sure our fundraising activity is legal and safe?

How can I cover the costs of my event?
Our Fundraising guide has tips on how to keep your costs low. For example, you can ask local businesses to sponsor your events, donate materials and prizes, or offer their services free of charge.

Why raise funds for Mencap?
There are 200 children born each week who will have a learning disability. Without specialist support from the start, those children will find it difficult to reach their potential, and the impact on their families can be devastating.
It doesn’t need to be this way.
We believe that the aspirations a parent or carer has for their child with a learning disability should be the same as those for any other child; to go to school, make friends, get a job and have a place of their own when they’re older.
Mencap’s early years team of specialists offers families a support programme, shaped by real experiences and tailored to their needs. It costs £1,500 to support a family for a year...
- £10 can provide an hour of one on one in depth support from an early years support worker in the family home
- £28 can help pay for a family day out
- £40 will provide an early years support worker for one afternoon.
Whatever you do, the funds you raise for Mencap will make a real difference to someone’s life and their family.
