Eligibility for a DBS check
To apply for an Enhanced or Standard DBS, you cannot be...
- self employed
- a sole trader
- wanting to carry out a DBS for someone you're employing to provide services for yourself, a family member or friend
- the Director or company owner, unless you have a co-owner/director to apply for you (they can't be a family member/relative or live at the same address as you).

Depending on the services you offer, your licensing body or local council may be able to apply for a DBS on your behalf.

Register with Mencap for a DBS check
To register with Mencap, please complete our online registration form to let us know that you'd like a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check. After your have registered you will receive an email with your log in details.

Once an application has been countersigned and sent to the DBS for processing, the DBS average at 15 business days to process the application.
Some applications with the DBS can take longer for them to process.

The Update Service is run by the Disclosure Barring Service. It allows applicants to keep their DBS certificates up to date and for employers to check a DBS certificate.
