Cost of living crisis

Cost of living crisis

Some food, gas, electricity and some money with an arrow pointing up.

What is the cost of living crisis?

The cost of things people need, like food, gas, electricity and petrol is going up quickly.

A man giving a man in a wheelchair a drink. In front of them is a hand with some money and beside them is an arrow pointing up.

Some people are being asked to pay more for their care as well.

A man shrugging his shoulders in front of lots of different leaflets on different types of benefits like Carers Allowance, and Personal Independence Payment

Wages and benefits are not going up as quickly, so it might get harder for people to pay for things they need.

A woman is holding her purse upside down looking for money but there is no money left

How might it affect me?

You might find it harder to pay for food and other things you need.

A piece of salmon, a glass of water, broccoli, a red pepper and an apple.

The high price of fresh and healthy food might make it difficult to eat a balanced diet.

Money and food

Your weekly shopping might cost more than usual.

A red cross beside a tin of baked beans.

This might mean you have to buy less.

A can of fizzy drink, a packet of crisps and a pint of lager.

You might need to spend less on the things you like, but are not things you need.

An outline of a house with a gas flame and an electric socket inside. Beside the house is a hand holding some money and an arrow pointing up.

It might cost more money to pay for gas and electricity for your home.

A man wearing shorts and a tshirt with the sun behind him.

You might not notice this in the spring and summer, because the weather is warmer and there are more hours of daylight.

A man opening an oven door.

You might notice it in the winter when most people need to use more gas and electric to keep their homes warm, or to cook hot food.
