Celebrations across our services
Across Mencap services, the party spirit has been just as strong.
At Rowan House, preparations have been in full swing, with teams and the people we support coming together to celebrate this landmark birthday in style. From decorations and creative projects, to getting involved Involved is being included in something or taking part in something. in the One Big Walk, there has been a real sense of community as everyone gets involved.
It was absolutely beautiful seeing the joy and the excitement of the people we support, especially during the One Big Walk and how happy they were tying ribbons on the tree, putting their fingers on the canvas and dinning with families and friends. It was such a great day, planning and hosting a big event in my service and for the belonging network, RING where I am a co-chair. Everyone feels really inclusive and this made me so happy.
Creativity in celebration
A special thank you goes to Jane Burse for creating a beautiful commemorative canvas, capturing the spirit of the celebration and providing a lasting reminder of this important moment in Mencap’s history.
Looking back and ahead
While this anniversary is a time to celebrate, it’s also a moment to reflect on eight decades of progress.
For 80 years, Mencap has been working to ensure that people with a learning disability A learning disability is to do with the way someone's brain works. It makes it harder for someone to learn, understand or do things. are valued, listened to and included in society. None of this would be possible without the incredible efforts of colleagues, volunteers, supporters and partners across the country.
As we look ahead, our focus remains the same: to help people with a learning disability live life to the full. We will do this by supporting individuals to live the lives they choose and continuing to make a meaningful difference in communities wherever we can.
The celebrations happening across the UK are a powerful reminder of what Mencap is all about, community, compassion and impact.
So here’s to 80 years of Mencap, and to many more years of working together to create a more inclusive society for people with a learning disability, and to another 80 years of progress!
