“Personal Independence Payments fund the extra cost of being disabled. They are very different to benefits to disabled people who are out of work and need money for living expenses . The Government appears to be conflating the two.

There are thousands of people with a learning disability who stand to lose PIP under current proposals. This will damage their health and wellbeing and their ability to afford the extra costs of being disabled such as specialist food, higher energy bills or accessible transport. Restricting PIP eligibility will force thousands of disabled people into poverty.

A better way to make savings to the welfare budget is to get more people into work and we need details about the plan to spend the £1bn of employment support which has been promised.  Mencap’s research shows that 86% of people with a learning disability who do not have a job want to work, but they need more support from Government and employers to support their needs and aspirations.

MPs now face voting on devastating cuts that will vastly impact their disabled constituents without key information on what the Government is planning to do to support them. It is vital that the concerns of people with a learning disability are heard.”
