Your learning and development

We like people to explore their careers with us. You’ll find all kinds of learning opportunities on offer. There’ll always be a new challenge to take on, or something new to learn.

We like people to explore their careers with us. You’ll find all kinds of learning opportunities on offer. There’ll always be a new challenge to take on, or something new to learn.

Your time with Mencap will start with a full induction, and we’ve got everything in place to make sure you never stop learning. You’ll be able to take control of your own professional development. And you’ll find that, through the people you meet, the work you do, and experiences you share, you’ll grow in all kinds of other ways too.

The result of all of this? You’ll feel inspired to reach your full potential.

New starters

When you start, you’ll go to a Welcome to the Royal Mencap Society training day. This gives an overview of what we do and helps you to understand more about learning disability. You’ll feel inspired as well as informed.

You’ll also have an induction tailored to your job - this could include training days, distance learning or working with your manager.

Shape Your Future

At the heart of our commitment to our people’s development and wellbeing, you’ll find Shape Your Future - our approach to performance appraisal. It’s for everyone here. And it’s seen countless people all across Mencap make serious progress in their careers.

As part of Shape Your Future, you’ll have regular conversations with your manager about how you are doing, and the support you need, as well as time to plan your development. Whenever a need or ambition is identified, your manager will be there to help.

I started out as a support worker, now I’m an Operations Director and I’m still given opportunities to develop and progress. I have carved out a career with Mencap by taking opportunities when they arise, working hard and being prepared to adapt.

Your ongoing learning

Your induction is just the beginning of your learning with us. Every day, you’ll learn from your manager, your colleagues and, above all, people with a learning disability who you work with and, in some roles, support.

We also have a dedicated learning and development team who provide a wide range of training. This includes management development and bespoke training for the needs of teams and the people who we support.

Being recognised made me feel proud and valued.

The programme helped me in my own personal development and gave me a chance to explore and understand the different services Mencap offers.

Wendy, Night Support Worker
