Comic actor, father and passionate campaigner for people with a learning disability: Lord Brian Rix was an extraordinary man. When his daughter was born with Down’s syndrome in 1951, doctors advised him to ‘put her away in a home and forget about her’.

Instead, Brian Rix began a 60-year fight to create a world where people with a learning disability had the opportunity to learn, work and live life the way they chose.

Help us create a better future

Brian Rix was at the heart of the Mencap movement and played a central role in many landmark moments for people with a learning disability, both as a campaigner and from within Parliament.

However, despite all Lord Rix achieved, people with a learning disability of all ages still face fundamental challenges, including terrible isolation and loneliness, hate crime and poorer healthcare.

But he proved we can all change the future. By leaving a gift to Mencap in your Will you can too. Click on the link to order your free guide, and find out how a gift in your Will can create a better future for people with a learning disability

How your gift helps

Gifts in Wills fund over half of all our work at Mencap. They allow us to be there for people with a learning disability and their families through every stage of their lives – from supporting parents at the point of diagnosis and ensuring children get the right early years support, to helping people with a learning disability live with independence, freedom and dignity in their later years. Without gifts in Wills, we simply couldn’t offer as many people with a learning disability this vital support.

Of course, the things Lord Rix achieved in his lifetime were extraordinary. But, by leaving a gift to Mencap in your Will, you too can make a real and lasting difference to people with a learning disability and their families.
