Questions and answers about the London Marathon

The London Marathon is a 26.2-mile (42.195-kilometer) race, which is the standard distance for marathons worldwide.

For most participants, there are no qualifying times required. However, elite runners and certain championship categories may have specific qualifying criteria.

The London Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the world, typically attracting over 40,000 participants. The exact number may vary from year to year.

Yes, walking the London Marathon is allowed, but there are time limits in place to ensure the safety of participants and the smooth running of the event.

The London Marathon starts in Greenwich Park and passes through various iconic landmarks in London, including Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament , and Buckingham Palace. The exact route may vary slightly each year.

The minimum fundraising target for the London Marathon in 2025 is £2,500.

We also have a £100 registration fee that is non-refundable and non-transferable. This means it cannot be refunded or transferred to another runner or a future year.

Gift aid is also additional and cannot go towards your fundraising target.

We set the minimum fundraising target at £2,500 to make sure we’re able to cover the cost of the place, as well as put enough back into our vital work to support people with a learning disability across the UK.

The full amount is due 1 month after event day as we know a lot of donations come in on the week of and after the event, so there is plenty of time to plan your fundraising and collect donations.

We will be in touch throughout your journey to provide fundraising tips and ideas.

Please make sure you're confident you can raise the £2,500 before you apply.

We would like you to hit the fundraising deadline before or as close to the deadline as possible, but we understand money can come in closer to the date or at different times. Please let us know if this will be the case with you.

Once you officially secure a place with us, we will send you a fundraising pack with various fundraising materials to kick start your fundraising!

For any fundraising materials please contact marathonteam@mencap.org.uk and they will send everything additional that you might need.

We will keep in contact with you by giving you a call each month to check on your fundraising, update you with all important information and checking if you need any additional support. We will send you emails too.

You will receive a running plan and regular monthly sessions with a professional running coach. The sessions will cover nutrition, training and various tips and tricks to your success!
