How to use a timer plug

A timer plug.

What is a timer plug?

A timer plug is a plug which has the time on it.

You can plug something into the timer plug and choose what time you want it to be on and off.  For example a lamp or a heater.

Some people call a timer plug a plug in timer.

Why use a timer plug?

If you use a timer plug, you do not need to be in the room to switch the lamp or heater on and off.

You might want to use a timer plug when you are not at home to switch a lamp on and off to make it look as if someone is in the room.

You might want to use a timer plug to switch a heater on before you get up in the morning.

How do I use a timer plug?

There are lots of different types of timer plug so you might want to read the instructions for your timer plug.

If you do not have the instructions, you might be able to find them on the internet, or ask someone you trust to help you.

If you do not have the instructions for your timer plug, this information should help you to use most timer plugs.

Set the time it is now on your timer plug.  On some timer plugs, there is an arrow which should point to the time it is now.

Some timer plugs have a 24 hour clock.

Think about what times you want your lamp or heater to be on.

Think about what times you want your lamp or heater to be off.

Set the times that you want your lamp or heater to be on and off on your timer plug.

You might have to set the times on your timer plug with:

  • a digital clock
  • pins that you push in or out
  • pins that you push up or down.

Plug your lamp or heater into the timer plug.

Switch your lamp or heater on.

Some timer plugs have a switch on the side that lets you choose if you want your lamp or heater:

  • on all of the time, or
  • only on at the times you set on the timer.

Put the timer plug into the socket in the wall and switch the socket on.

Your lamp or heater should now switch on and off at the times you have chosen.
