You can apply for free vehicle tax for your car or van if:

- you have an illness or disability, or
- you only use your car or van for someone with an illness or disability.

In England, the person with the illness or disability must get 1 of these benefits:
- higher rate mobility component of
Disability Living Allowance
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is the name of a benefit that some people with a disability get. The money is to pay for extra help you might need to look after yourself and to get around. Disability Living Allowance is being replaced by a benefit called Personal Independence Payment
Personal Independence
Independence means doing things on your own. Making your own choices. Payment (PIP) is the name of a benefit that some people with a disability or health condition get. The money is to pay for extra help you might need to look after yourself and to get around. Some people who used to get Disability Living Allowance (DLA) now get PIP instead. (PIP). (DLA)
- enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
- War Pensioners Mobility Supplement (WPMS).

You or the person with the disability or illness must be the registered keeper of the car or van.

The registered keeper is the person who uses the car the most.

The name of the registered keeper is on a form called a V5C. Every car or van has a V5C.

If you are in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, the rules and benefits may be different.
