What is Down syndrome?
Down syndrome is also called Down's syndrome.
People with Down syndrome are born with an extra chromosome.
A chromosome is part of a cell.
Every living thing is made of lots of cells.
No-one knows why the extra chromosome happens.
Down syndrome is not usually passed on from parent to child.
Down syndrome and learning disability
If you have Down syndrome, you will also have a learning disability A learning disability is to do with the way someone's brain works. It makes it harder for someone to learn, understand or do things. .
Having a learning disability is different for everyone.
Children with Down syndrome might not start to do things like holding a toy or walking as quickly as other children.
Adults with Down syndrome might also need help, like help to cook a meal or to go out with friends.
Everyone with Down syndrome is different.
Everyone with Down syndrome can be happy and do things they enjoy if they have the right support.
Some people with Down syndrome will have problems with seeing and hearing and with their heart.
Help
If you are born with Down syndrome you will have it for all of your life.
Things which help children with Down syndrome:
- good healthcare
- support for children and their parents from a young age
- good relationships Relationships are about the people in your life. You might have different types of relationships like friendships, family relationships, or a boyfriend or girlfriend. and family life
- education Education is when you learn things. When you fill in a form to get a job, education means you write where you went to school, college or university. and support groups.

Positive About Down's Syndrome supports parents of children with Down Syndrome and parents who are going to have a baby with Down syndrome.
