What is a Disabled Facilities Grant?
A Disabled Facilities Grant is money you can apply for if you have a disability and you want to make changes to your home so it is easier for you to live there.
For example, you might want to have a bigger door so you can get in and out of your home more easily.
You might want to make big changes to your home like a new bathroom or a stair lift.
You can apply to your local council A council is also called a local authority A local authority is also called a council. They are a group of people who make decisions about some of the things in the area where you live like schools, social care Social care means the services that give care and support to people who need it. The money is called a Disabled Facilities Grant.
Who can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant?
You can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant if:
- you or someone living in your home has a disability
- you plan to live in your home for the next 5 years (This might not count if the person with a disability does not have long to live.)
- you are a landlord A landlord is the owner of a property which they rent out to tenants. They can be a council, a housing association, or an individual person. who needs to make changes for a disabled person living in your property
- you do not have enough money to make the changes yourself
you have a disabled child under 18.
If you apply for a grant for your child your money will not be counted.
Things to remember about a Disabled Facilities Grant
Each council has its own rules about who can get a Disabled Facilities Grant.

You can only have a Disabled Facilities Grant if you do not get too much money each month or if you have too much money in your savings.
Before they give you the money, the council will want to see:
- your bank statements
- proof of how much money you get each month
- proof of how much money you have in savings.
The council might not give you the money if you start to make any changes before they have said they will give you the money.
Once the council have said they will give you the money, you have up to 12 months to finish the work.
Some councils will pay the money to you when the work is finished.
Some councils will pay the money to the person doing the work.
If you get a Disabled Facilities Grant, it will not affect your benefits.
