A group of people are sat around a table talking

How did Mencap design the survey?

We asked a group of people with a learning disability to help us design the survey. We talked to them about what is important to ask people with a learning disability.

A young woman reading an Easy Read booklet

They helped us to choose which questions to have in the survey. They helped to make the survey more easy to understand. They helped us to choose which pictures to use.

A group of people pointing to a piece of paper on a table inside a magnifying glass with a blue circle around it

We also have a person with a learning disability working in the Research team on the survey. Other team members from Mencap helped us to design the survey too.

A man in a wheelchair with his thumb down and holding a piece of paper with a red cross on it.

We also got ideas from other surveys. We found that lots of surveys for the general public are not accessible for people with a learning disability. So we did not include many questions from general public surveys in the Big Public Transport Survey.

Two women with speech bubbles talk to each other. One is writing on a clipboard

We then tested the survey with other people with a learning disability. This was to check if people understood the questions. We made some changes to the survey based on what they told us.

A man reading an easy read booklet with the word Report on the cover

How will Mencap share what they find out?

We will write a report about what we find out. We will share the report with other organisations . We will also share the report on our website and social media (things like Instagram and Facebook).

A woman with her finger on her lips and a sign saying Confidential

Will you use my name in the report?

No, we will not use your name in the report. Your answers to this survey are confidential . This means that we will not use your name when we share what we have found out.

A woman with her palm outstretched saying NO

Do I have to take part in the survey?

No. You don’t have to take part in the survey if you don’t want to. If you change your mind during the survey, you can stop.

A drawing of a consent leaflet with a big green tick on it

You will tell us if you want to take part.

You can then answer the survey questions.

A consent form with a red cross on it

Or if you don’t want to take part then nothing more will happen.

A magnifying glass over different groups of people

How will you find people to take part in the survey?

We will contact lots of different people. For example, we will contact organisations, groups and services who work with people with a learning disability in the UK.

We will also share the survey with local councils.

We will try to find ways to contact people who don’t use services too.
