Mencap did a survey for people with a learning disability about work.

A survey asks the same questions to a group of people.

A woman wearing a cap with a speech bubble coming out of her mouth.

The answers people gave us helped us to understand:

A man in a suit stretching his arms out holding his thumbs up
  • What people with a learning disability want when it comes to work.
A job rejection letter with a large red cross over the corner
  • Why people with a learning disability find it hard to get a paid job.
A woman holding her hands to her head looking stressed, with red wavy lines by her head.
  • Why people with a learning disability find it hard to stay in paid work.
A woman helping a man to fill in a form
  • What can be done to help more people with a learning disability get a job.

Some of the best things about having a paid job people told us about were:

Reasons why people left have left their paid job

A man looking sad and unhappy

Some people said they had bad experiences after getting a paid job that made them leave that job.

A woman stuffing envelopes at a desk saying "Help please."

Bad experiences included:

  • Not getting support from managers and other staff
A man wearing a suit sitting at a laptop computer scratching his head and looking confused
  • Computer systems that are hard to use
A woman looking sad as two people talk about her behind her back.
  • Facing prejudice in the workplace

Prejudice means having a negative attitude towards a person because of something about them, like a learning disability.
