I started my podcast in lockdown, February 2021. I really felt that the voices of people with a learning disability were not being heard- we were forgotten and when we spoke out, we weren’t listened to. I was very frustrated and decided to take matters into my own hands by starting a podcast. After doing a bit of research , I decided on a unique and memorable name- Ciara's Pink Sparkle Podcast- then bought a microphone and did a few dry runs with people I already knew.

Once I got things sorted, I set up some interviews - my first proper one was with Mencap Voices Council member Sam Jeffries - and Ciara’s Pink Sparkle Podcast was born!

I’m beyond proud that my podcast has reached number one for non-profit podcasts on iTunes - I even beat Kevin Bacon!

When I first saw the rankings I could hardly believe it - but on the other hand, I know how hard I’ve worked to get it there. To have a podcast with a presenter with a learning disability reaching number one on a chart is a huge achievement, and even though it’s gone back down I know it’s possible.

I love interviewing. I think it’s really important to have conversations with people from different backgrounds, and the podcast is a great excuse! My time at Mencap has taught me that I’m a natural presenter, and this podcast lets me do something with this talent I’ve been given. It’s also great to have a project I’m totally in control of - I don’t have to answer to anyone and I’m completely in charge. It’s my baby, and I love it!

I’ve had some amazing guests over the years, from Penny Mordaunt to U2’s The Edge. If I had to choose a favourite guest, it’d be comedian and actor Rob Brydon. Firstly, because I’m a huge fan of Gavin and Stacey. Secondly, because of the way I managed to book him! My husband and I went to see his solo tour in 2021 during the show, he made a joke about people with a disability. It wasn’t a nasty joke, but it was quite uncomfortable for me to hear, especially seeing the whole audience laugh at it. That night, I tweeted him about it, not thinking he would respond.

Well, I got a message very quickly from his people apologising- the next day, I emailed them back and invited Rob on the podcast. He sent me a lovely, personal email, accepting the opportunity and apologising for the joke he made. For me, that was a complete win and a great opportunity to use my platform to educate someone. That interview now has over 700 plays- ranked just behind my conversation with The Edge.

I’m not resting on my laurels, either. I have some amazing guests lined up for the remainder of 2023 and into 2024. I’ve got Shaun Wallace, aka the Dark Destroyer from The Chase, amazing actress Juliet Aubrey, Nicky Campbell, and Adam Clayton from U2.

Not bad for a project I started in lockdown two years ago! I never dreamed it would get to where it is now - I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

Watch your back, Kevin Bacon!
