Hi, I’m Fay! I volunteered as a classroom assistant and mentor. I supported learners in the classroom and in the community .

This is my story…..

I decided to make a career change toward educational psychology and started my master`s degree at Bristol University. Starting this new career at Mencap as a volunteer and being involved with young people who have learning disabilities was a great start for me.

Classroom volunteering helped me to observe current teaching practices which was my main aim.

Additionally, I very much enjoyed supporting learners in group activities as well as one-on-one support. It is very rewarding to witness their progress and seeing them getting more confident toward job placements and not afraid as much.

We all get very excited when our learners got a job offers. Quite recently one of our new learner told to the tutor that his experience and support in the classroom at Mencap was his best so far, and he added how he felt as an individual here with us. My volunteering role gave me the experience to move into a paid a role with Mencap and I am now a job coach on the Supported Internship Programme!
