Becoming an Author

In 2022 I started the journey of writing my own book. I got this opportunity thanks to a partnership between Mencap and a publisher called Hachette who wanted to publish a book to help children understand what it’s like to have a learning disability . It was a very exciting process and a lot of hard work. I was very lucky to get lots of support both from Hachette and from the fundraising team at Mencap and colleagues in my team. I worked closely on the project with all of these people and really enjoyed it.

There were some difficult days, however, where I would just look at my laptop and would have no ideas. But then I would go and get a coffee (there’s a Starbucks 2 minutes away from my house!) This would refresh my mind and give me some more ideas as to what I would write about next.

I was also able to use writing skills I have learnt over the years, like from when I did work experience at The Financial Times as part of my supported internship that I did with Mencap, as well as from writing articles for our newsletter. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, so I’m really happy I have been able to write this book.

I’m so proud of the book and can’t wait for people to read it.
