The Mencap Manifesto: Homes not Hospitals
There are over 2,000 people with a learning disability and, or autistic people, stuck in mental health hospitals.
The NHS has a target to half the number of people with a learning disability and/ or autistic people in mental health hospitals by March 2024.
Mencap thinks that this target will be missed.
Change the Law on Mental Health
Mencap wants all political parties to promise to change the law Laws are the rules that everyone in the country has to follow. If you don't follow the rules you can get in trouble with the police. on Mental Health.
Help people live in their own homes
Mencap wants all the political parties to make sure there is good support in the community A community is the people and places in an area. .
This means things like:
- making sure there are enough people working in
social care
Social care means the services that give care and support to people who need it.
and that they have the right training and skills to support people with a learning disability and or autistic people.
- making sure there is the right housing for people.
Improve the Building the Right Support Action Plan
The Building the Right Support Action Plan is
the Government
The Government are the people who run the country. The Government decide how much tax people should pay and how things like the National Health Service (NHS) should work.
’s plan for making sure people with a learning disability and, or autistic people, are not stuck in mental health hospitals and get the right support in the community.
Mencap wants all political parties to promise to update the Action Plan and make it stronger.
