What is Diwali?
Diwali is a religious celebration.
It is celebrated by people who believe in Hinduism.
Hinduism is a type of religion Religion is to do with the things you believe about the world. For example you may believe there is a god or something else. Examples of religions are Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. .
Someone who believes in Hinduism is called Hindu.
Though it’s a Hindu festival, people from other religions sometimes celebrate Diwali as well.
Diwali happens once a year in October or November.
Diwali celebrations go on for five days.
Sometimes Diwali is called the “festival of lights.”
That’s because people celebrate by using lots of lights. This can be things like:
- Candles
- Lighting a lamp called a diya
- Fireworks
- Putting lights on their house or shop.
People also celebrate Diwali by:
- Going to see family and friends
- Sharing food and giving sweets as gifts
- Going to the temple to pray.
A temple is a place where people of the same religion come together for religious events.
