What are the 'models of disability'?

People have different views of disability.

There are 2 main models looking at disability in different ways.

The 2 main models of disability are 'medical' and 'social'.

What is the medical model?

The medical model sees the disability as a difference that needs to be 'fixed' or 'cured'.

It sees the person with a disability as the 'problem'.

The medical model looks at what is 'wrong' with a person.

What is the social model?

The social model of disability says that people are disabled by barriers in society.

Barriers can be physical, like buildings not having accessible toilets.

They can also be about the way people think about disability.

This model says that society needs to change to enable people.
