Remember your loved one through a funeral collection
We can provide a collection box to help family and friends give in memory of your loved one. We'll also send funeral cards for those who want to donate online. It’s a beautiful way to honour their life while supporting people with a learning disability.

“Raising money in our mother’s memory felt like something practical we could do.”

Caroline and Giles’ late mother Rosemary found Mencap after her son Robert was born with Down’s syndrome. When it came to fundraising at Rosemary’s funeral, the family felt Mencap was the right fit.

Questions and answers about donating in memory

An in memory donation refers to donations made in memory of the deceased. Sometimes, family and friends choose to make charitable donations to celebrate their loved one’s life while supporting the good causes that were important to them.

If you’re looking for memorial donation ideas, Mencap can help.

You could create a memorial page (also called an online tribute or tribute website), make a one off or recurring donation in memory, leave a gift in your will, or host a funeral collection.

Whatever you decide, when you donate in memory of a loved one, you’ll help Mencap to support people with a learning disability in their name.

Some people choose to collect in memory donations at their loved one’s funeral. You can direct people to your Much Loved tribute page by adding your unique URL to the order of service.

If you’d like, the Mencap in memory team can create a QR code for your page that can add to the order of service or send you funeral cards so that friends and family can make their donation in tribute to someone special.

To ask the Mencap in memory team for a QR code, funeral envelopes or a collection box, please contact [email protected].

Much Loved is a trusted memorial website, also known as a memorial tribute platform, where you can remember someone special and fundraise in their memory.

Friends and family can use your online memorial to celebrate their life by sharing photos and thoughts, burning virtual candles and writing in loving memory messages. You can also use it as a place to donate in memory, raising vital funds for Mencap in your loved one’s name.

Memorial websites, also known as tribute websites, can offer comfort during grief. These memorial pages are yours, free, for as long as you like. You can revisit yours on important dates and even use it to fundraise in the future if you decide to take on fundraising challenges to support Mencap in your loved one’s memory.

You can claim Gift Aid on an in memory donation if it’s a donation from an individual. You cannot claim Gift Aid on donations on behalf of a group, such as collections from a funeral.

Yes, you can write a memorial donation message when making a donation in memory of someone. You can do this via our online donation form, when you donate on a Much Loved tribute page, or by emailing our team at [email protected]. We’re always honoured to hear about why you chose to make an in memory donation and to help continue your loved one’s story.

If you’re struggling with losing a loved one, there are charities and organisations that can help you. Mencap has collected a series of accessible resources to support you, including resources to help you talk to someone with a learning disability about grief.
