Ombudsman's report

In March 2009 the Health Ombudsman published a damning indictment of the appalling neglect of six people with a learning disability who died in NHS care.

The six deaths were originally described in Mencap's 'Death by indifference' report. Mencap believes that:

  • Every individual with a learning disability must receive the equal healthcare they have a human right to.
  • Every person working in the NHS, from nurses to chief executives of strategic health authorities, must treat this issue as a priority.

This means ensuring that all of the recommendations from the Health Ombudsman's reports and from Sir Jonathan Michael's independent inquiry are fully implemented.
