Learning Disability Week

Join our campaign to end learning disability hate crime

This year’s Learning Disability Week will be from Monday 18 June to Sunday 24 June. It will continue the great work of Learning Disability week 2011, which saw the launch of the ‘Stand by me’ campaign on hate crime.

Over the last year, the work of Mencap campaigners has meant police forces up and down the country have embraced the ‘Stand by me’ campaign and have been tackling disability hate crime. But this progress must continue.

From November, police and crime commissioners (PCCs), will be elected and take on the role of the existing police authorities outside of London. They will be in charge of making plans for the police force in their region and deciding what is most important.

We mustn't allow PCCs to change course and let all our hard work go to waste. It will be more important than ever that we come together to make sure disability hate crime stays at the centre of their plans.

That's why during Learning Disability Week, this year, we will be telling PCC candidates why they need to take action on disability hate crime. You can help by:

  • writing to/meeting your local candidates
  • writing to you local paper
  • joining a local campaign
  • organising an awareness raising event.

If you want to get involved you can download a campaigns pack to help you lobby your PCC candidate.
