"I was inspired to work in care after my husband unexpectedly had a brain haemorrhage caused by a virus when he was just 40 and I nursed him back to health.

I found it rewarding helping him learn to speak again and wanted to give back and help others so after working in care homes I started working for Mencap in February last year. I support three ladies in their 40s and it’s the most rewarding job. I’ve helped one lady set up a business painting nails and  take another horse-riding and to do volunteer work.

Seeing the look of joy on their faces as they do the things they love is incredible."

- Nikki, 48, a support worker from Pembrokeshire.

I learn as much from my clients as they do from me - one has taught me how to crochet. The people I work with become a huge part of your life, like friends. I take them on holiday, we celebrate milestones such as birthdays and I see them most days, helping them with dinner, taking them to hospital appointments and sometimes sleeping over to ensure they are OK through the night. It’s so satisfying seeing someone be their best and helping them to find the meaning in their life."
