What is Intersectionality?

What is Intersectionality?

A white woman in a floral dress holds her right hand up and points to herself with the other. A black man in a blue shirt smiles.

There are lots of different ways to describe who we are:

A black woman looks at a card. A white man in a black shirt faces the camera.
  • our gender
Three outlies of people to represent male, female and transgender.

Gender is how we think of ourselves. This might be male or female, or both, or neither.

A group of people
  • our race
Two men hold hands with each other, next to two women with their arms around their shoulders.
  • our sexual orientation
A man and a woman hug each other

Sexual orientation is who we are attracted to.

Two wheelchair users and a man with a guide dog.
  • our disability (if we have one)
A group of people face the camera
  • and other things like our religion and age.
A white woman in a floral dress holds her right hand up and points to herself with the other. A black man in a blue shirt smiles.

Intersectionality is about how our lives are affected by these different things.

Three overlapping circles with the words Age, Race and Gender in each one.

And how these things cross over (like an intersection).

A white man in a red shirt looks downwards, with a sad look on his face.

For example, we might experience discrimination because we have a disability.

A group of people surround a woman, shouting abuse at her.

Discrimination is when we are treated unfairly because of who we are.

Two men point at an Asian woman

We might also experience discrimination because we are Black, Asian, or from a minority ethnic community .

Two men hold hands

Or because we are gay , lesbian , or bisexual .

A black outline with a T representing transgender.

Or because we are transgender .

A teenage girl with an arrow pointing towards a middle aged man.

Transgender means that you do not think of yourself as the same sex you were born.

A group of people surround a woman, shouting abuse at her.

Intersectionality means that someone can be discriminated against because of more than one thing about them.

A black man in a blue shirt

For example, if you are Black and gay.

A white woman in a floral dress holds her right hand up and points to herself with the other

Or if you are a woman with a learning disability .

Three overlapping circles with the words Age, Race and Gender in each one.

When we talk about intersectionality, we mean that we have to think about the different parts of people.

A group of people surround a woman, shouting abuse at her.

And how some groups of people could be discriminated against because of more than one thing.

Two men point at an Asian woman

Intersectionality means that some people might experience even more discrimination.

Two women and a man sit next to each other in a row.

For example, people who have a learning disability and are transgender might be treated differently to other people when they try to get a job.

A woman in a pink top sits behind a desk which has a piece of paper on it.

It might be harder for them to get a job than people who have a learning disability who are not transgender.

A man in a dark suit sits behind a desk.

It might be harder for them to get a job than transgender people who do not have a learning disability.
