Play Our Way has been funded by Children in Need to improve access to leisure opportunities for young people with a learning disability.
Young people with a learning disability can miss out on activities enjoyed by their peers because of a lack of awareness, or because facilities aren't suitable.
In different areas across Wales, we've helped train young people with a learning disability to be project ambassadors, and supported them to take part in different local leisure activities. Whilst taking part, the ambassadors assessed how accessible the leisure activities are for young people with a learning disability, and how they can be improved.
The activities include kayaking, golf, street dancing, and surfing. Play Our Way staff and ambassadors work with providers of these activities, such as leisure centres and outdoor activity centres to help make the pursuits they offer more accessible. The project also aims to develop the ambassadors themselves, by helping improve their confidence and skills, and by promoting teamwork.
