The Older Voices project draws on Mencap Cymru’s experience of promoting the rights of people with a learning disability, and supporting them to speak out. The project is funded by Comic Relief.
Many older people with a learning disability will have spent time in institutions, which will have had a negative effect on their independence and self-esteem. People with a learning disability in Wales and the UK are routinely isolated, and have little say in their own lives, which is also the case for many older people. This means that older people with a learning disability are a group who are in danger of being completely overlooked.
Older Voices aims to empower them to shape the development of their communities, by sitting on Older People’s forums for example. This project will explore issues which are important to older people with a learning disability, and test ways to get their voices heard which they find helpful.
