This profile of a local Mencap family support service shows how we work with people with a learning disability and their families to help parents and carers cope.
Mencap's family support service in Haverhill, Suffolk works with 13 local families providing support to their children. Since 2002 the service has supported a range of families on a short- and long-term basis and continues to receive referrals.
The service provides a mix of support in the family home and in community-based leisure, therapeutic or educational activities. This provides an opportunity for both the young person and parents and carers to have a break and helps them all to cope.
We support many young people who have complex needs which may be a result of behavioural, communication or physical disabilities. Sometimes this may involve support on a two-to-one basis.
Naturally, we feel it is important to develop a good relationship with the young people we support. It's equally vital that we develop a strong, trusting relationship with parents and other members of the family. We make sure that there is consistency in the support we provide and that a family has staff dedicated to their needs.
Working with a family to set up a new services is always an exciting time. It involves getting to know each other, helping the family to access services and, with the consent of parents, introducing new, fun activities.
Our dedicated, well-trained staff are the key to our success.
