Mencap's Transition services are designed to introduce young people who have a learning disability or learning difficulties to the world of work. Mencap can offer work preparation training and / or work experience placements to young people who are still at school or college.
The project works with individuals with a learning disability within mainstream or special schools and supports them to prepare for leaving school, helping them to make informed choices about their future. They will be invited to attend a transition planning meeting where they can discuss the post school options that are available to them.
The main options that are likely to be discussed are:
- transferring to another school
- going to college
- training / apprenticeships
- vocational training
- day services
The young people will benefit from a specifically tailored, individualised programme that will help to identify their own particular skills and abilities alongside any specific training needs.
Each individual learning programme will consist of some or all of the following elements:
- skills analysis
- job profiling
- job matching
- job sampling
- vocational advice and guidance
- benefits advice and better off calculation
- work skills training
- interview skills training
- job search activities
- support to develop independent work skills
- support to develop independent travel skills
