I have been very concerned for a long time about the poor standard of record keeping by the care staff who support my son, at one stage £200 went missing. After a long battle, culminating in an appeal to the Ombudsman, my local authority has now agreed to use My Money Matters for everyone they support in the county. It is "Best Practice" written by the Department of Health and a consortium of charities. When I started, there wasn't a copy in the whole of the authority, I had to lend them my copy! If you are concerned about the management of your son/daughter's money by a care provider, ask them to use MMM, and if they refuse, ask the Care Manager. Since I have started complaining, I have heard many stories of care providers acting improperly. I am left wondering is Financial Abuse is widespread?
Why cant people just do the job they are paid for?
hi amy i have just come onto this site looking for info for a hard of learning friend who the social services finance team have allowed a thief they employed to steal some of hers and other vulnerable peoples money,
i kept my own records of what they should have in there keeping which was over £7000 which was supposed to be to pay my friends weekly bills but the thief took it instead of paying anything and nothing was paid putting my friend in a £2000 debt with her water
now the social services say they only have £3000 in there safe of her money and that nothing was stolen but getting information out of them is impossible they just ignore my letters or emails and gave my MP who wrote to them silly excuses which is very annoying
Hi Peter, it is cases such as yours that made me set up my company called Finacare. My brother is in a Mencap residential service and was both mischarged and had cash missing from his finances. After the money was returned to him I began working for other families who had dependents within the same facility and ALL of the people we looked at had been massively mischarged. We ended up getting between £7000 - £14000 returned to EACH service user by Mencap.
Unfortunately since starting the company I have come across so many people in the same situation so it is not just limited to one home or indeed one care provider.
The current procedures in place to manage service users finances are completely open to financial abuse and I have been trying for over three years to get these changed without success
Hi Peter, I use Finacare, and cannot recommend them highly enough. I suggest that first a Subject Access request is made to the LA asking for copies of all the financial records. Then get in touch with Finacare. For years my complaints to the LA about financial abuse were ignored, then they decided to try to force me to give up managing my son's money, rather than investigate the real financial abuse. Finacare proved that everything I said was true.
