Early departure from Belfast to London where we will board our flights to Oslo, and onwards to Alta in the far north of Norway.
In Alta, we will be met by our expedition leader and taken to our lodge. We will receive additional equipment and the arctic clothing necessary to allow us to participate in the extreme conditions. Following a briefing from the expedition leader, we will have dinner and take advantage of an early night.
Day 2 - Souluvombi (sledding 30km)
After breakfast, we will be shown how a dog sled works and learn how to use the ice brake and snow anchor. We then put the theory into practice and spend some time getting used to the basics of sledding. This is followed by an introduction to the dogs where we will learn how to harness and attach them to the sleds.
Once everyone is ready we leave for our next location, Souluvombi. We will be travelling through forest to reach higher ground before descending through forest again to arrive at the lodge. The group will be shown how to feed and care for the dogs, as we will be expected to feed, harness and look after our own team of dogs for the entire trip.
Day 3 - Maze (sledding 25km)
We begin with an early wake-up call as we need to feed the dogs early enough for them to digest their food before working.
With everything ready and packed, the dogs are harnessed and we'll sled towards Maze where our cabins await us. Having settled the dogs for the night, we have dinner in the cabin. There is a sauna at Maze cabin, so everybody who wants to do "the Viking test" can go for a roll in the snow!
Day 4 - Nedre Mollisjokk (sledding 60km)
After an early breakfast, we feed the dogs and pack ready to sled to Mollisjock. The terrain is mountainous and above the tree line. There will be many challenging up and downhill sections today.
Day 5 - Jotka (sledding 35km)
Today we follow the Jiesjokka River all the way to Jiesavri Lake and Jotka. Jiesjavri is the biggest lake in the Finnmark area.
Sledding along this beautiful frozen lake will really give us the feeling of accomplishing something really unique.
Day 6 - Gargia (sledding 55km)
From Jotka it is downhill all the way back to Gargia where a hot tub and a sauna are waiting!
Before the gala dinner we have the chance to visit the Ice Hotel (which is a smaller copy of the famous Ice hotel in Sweden) for a drink or two. Please note: this is an optional activity.
After breakfast we are transferred to Alta airport for our flights back to the UK.
