The team took on the 24th Marathon des Sables and are aiming to raise over £80,000 for Mencap.
Mick Burgess, Lewis Aldridge, Matt Bartram, Maggie Morgan, Peter Clist, Jon Stevens, Tim Lawrence, Richard Brown, Richard Gordon, Jeff Lapham, Daryl Farmer, Damian Hill and Paul Garner were expecting temperatures of up to 50°C but this year's event had a few surprises in store.
No Marathon des Sables is the same and this year the participants faced the challenge of highly unusual weather, as rain flooded the camp and forced the cancellation of the first and last days of the race. However, the race organisers worked swiftly to put together an alternative route whilst still ensuring the participants' safety. Every one pulled together to make it another memorable race, and at the end of the week the participants were in good spirits.
I cannot think how it could have been any better.
This year's race took the participants through 202km of the Moroccan Sahara desert, including the longest stage ever (91km). All Mencap's participants successfully finished the race, despite the obstacles.
The team all worked exceptionally hard with their training and fundraising and the elation when crossing the finishing line made it all worthwhile.
