Individual budgets should be used to improve people's lives, not to make cost savings. They should enable people with a learning disability to choose and pay for the services they need, giving them more choice and control over their lives.
Mencap believes that:
- the government must make individual budgets work
- individual budgets must be big enough to give people real choice and control
- individual budgets must be used to improve people's lives, not just to save money.
We are challenging the government and local authorities to make individual budgets work.
As part of the Welfare Reform Bill, the Government wants to grant disabled people a 'right to control' the way state services are provided for them. Read Mencap's response to the government's 'Right to Control' consultation here.
