Across the country, carers continue to support people with a learning disability with little or no help or recognition.
Carers who spend a lot of time supporting someone at home have a right to have their own needs and choices assessed and met. The role of carers should also be respected by all professional staff.
Mencap believes that:
- all carers should get the support they need so they can continue to care for the person they love, if that is their choice
- carers' rights should be a reality - they should know what support they are entitled to and how to get it.
What we are doing
- We are lobbying the government on their carers' strategy.
- We are calling for all families to have a right to good short breaks.
