Young people with a learning disability do not have the same opportunities to go to college, get a job or have a social life as other young people.
There are 262,000 young people with a learning disability aged 13 to 25 in the UK. Mencap believes that:
- all of these young people have a right to the same choices and opportunities for the future as other people their age
- all young people and their families should be supported during transition to help them move successfully into adult life.
We are campaigning to make sure the government includes young people with a learning disability in their plans for youth services.
Read Martin's story about how important the transition process is in planning for the future. If your child is going through transition you can find out more about the process in our 'Transition and further education' section.
