What is this exhibition about?

Homes Not Hospitals: The Fight for Freedom exhibition shares the experiences of people with a learning disability and autistic people who have been detained in mental health hospitals, and the fight of their families to get them out.
Behind every detainment is a family separated, missing birthdays, celebrations and everyday moments.

A pencil drawing of restraint

Whose stories are told?

The families involved in co-producing this exhibition have come together over many years. Many came together after the Winterbourne View abuse scandal, and as the promised reforms failed to materialise, their numbers grew as more people were admitted through the mental health hospital system.

Through personal testimony, photography, sound, and immersive installations, Homes Not Hospitals moves beyond statistics and focuses on the people affected.

As you move through the exhibition, you will encounter:
•    First-hand experiences from people and their families.
•    Powerful visual and audio installations
•    The realities of detention — and the hope of life in the community

Visitors are invited to observe, listen, reflect and take action.
