Coronavirus tests
Coronavirus tests

You might be asked to do a coronavirus test to find out if you have coronavirus.

There are 2 types of tests:
- a lateral flow test
- a PCR test

A lateral flow test is sometimes called a rapid antigen test, or a LFD test.

LFD stands for lateral flow device.

PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction.

You can find out the result of a lateral flow test quickly.

The result from a PCR test takes longer because it is sent to a laboratory.
A laboratory is a room where people use science to do tests.

If you feel nervous about doing the test, you can ask someone you trust to be with you.

You will need to read the instructions for the test to find out what to do.

If you find it difficult to read the instructions, you can ask someone to help you.

You might have to put a long stick called a swab in your mouth.

You will need to put the swab up your nose.

If you find it difficult to do the test, you can ask someone to help you.
There are 3 results you can have from a coronavirus test:
- negative
- positive
- void

A void result means that the test did not work properly

You should report your test result each time you do a test.
You can report your test result:
- online at www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result
- by phoning 119
