In 2016 Mencap surveyed over 300 young people with a learning disability and found that:
1 in 3 spend less than 1 hour outside their homes on a typical Saturday
49.3% would like to spend more time outside their house
17.8% feel alone and cut off from other people
How sport can help
Sport and physical activity can reduce loneliness and isolation.
Benefits for people with and without a learning disability include improved health and wellbeing, empowerment and greater social inclusion.
Sport and physical activity between people with and without a learning disability can also help to improve attitudes and challenge negative views towards people with a learning disability.
This is why the theme of Learning Disability Week 2019 is sport and inclusion.
What's happening for Learning Disability Week 2019?
From 17 to 23 June, we want as many people as possible, with and without a learning disability, to get involved in inclusive sporting activities in their local communities.
The map (which we'll be adding more to in the coming weeks) shows the different types of events taking place, including some events which you can get involved in.
Click on the different pins to find out more about each event. You can also click the icon in the top right hand corner to reveal the different categories of events.
We're still working on our events for Learning Disability Week, so be sure to check back here as more things will be added to the map in the run up to the 17 June!
We want to know if you're going to take part in a sporting activity during Learning Disability Week 2019!
Let us know what you're getting up to, and share your photos with us.
