FamilyHub is an online community for parents and family carers of people with a learning disability.
It is managed by Mencap, but first and foremost it's a place for parents to connect.
FamilyHub is a place for parents and family carers to share experiences, triumphs and challenges, and to offer support and guidance to others.
We know that parents are experts by experience, and we’re here simply to facilitate this community. We want FamilyHub to be a safe and welcoming place where family members can talk freely and share.
FamilyHub isn't meant for support workers or other professionals.
FamilyHub house rules
We want FamilyHub to be a safe, supportive community so we've made a few house rules. Each time you use FamilyHub you're agreeing to stick to them.
You must be at least 16 years old to join FamilyHub. Accounts of members found to be under 16 will be closed. This is for the safety and protection of children. If you are under 16 and need support, you may find it helpful to visit Sibs or Carers Trust.
FamilyHub is moderated during the working week, Monday to Friday. Out of hours support is not available. For urgent or out-of-hours help please contact Samaritans: 116 123.
Moderators might edit or remove posts that are inappropriate. More details about inappropriate content are given below.
Some of Mencap’s staff are part of FamilyHub such as our policy experts or advisors. They will offer their advice where appropriate. We aim to reply as soon as possible when you have a question but it can take up to 5 days.
Our Community Manager will also post from time to time, usually to get some conversations started or to welcome new members to the community.
Mencap is not responsible for the content posted by members of FamilyHub and any views expressed in FamilyHub are purely the views of the members and as such don't constitute professional recommendations or advice or the opinions of Mencap.
Content on FamilyHub will be deemed offensive, inappropriate or irrelevant and in breach of the house rules if it is:
harassing, defamatory, abusive, intimidating, discriminatory, pornographic, obscene or threatening
against the law - including the Data Protection Act
contains personal information or details which would enable someone to identify a person without their permission
deemed that the user is pretending to be someone other than themselves
medical endorsement or advice
a misrepresent or damage the reputation of Mencap
a complaint that should be directed elsewhere and through different channels
a message posted for personal financial gain (i.e. it’s advertising)
off topic and not relevant to the discussion or subject matter
This list is not exhaustive. Posting content that may put you or us at risk of prosecution, such as defamatory posts or content that breach someone else’s intellectual property rights is against our House Rules and Terms and Conditions.
Please do not 'name and shame' people or organisations, this can leave both you and Mencap open to prosecution if your comments could be interpreted as libellous. Please don’t use FamilyHub for anything unlawful, misleading or malicious.
Inappropriate content will be removed from FamilyHub, though we will do our best to let you know why in advance.
Feel free to post images but please make sure you don't post photos without the person's permission or of children under 18 without parental consent.
If you come across a post that breaks our house rules, please don't reply. People who post abusive or offensive messages are often looking for attention.
If you feel that something is offensive or distasteful you can use the flag button to highlight this to the community managers. This is done anonymously and will remain so. The community managers will review the reported content and take action accordingly. Clicking the flag button does not guarantee the content will be removed and also does not guarantee it will be hidden immediately.
You can also send an email to email@example.com with a link to the post and why you think it is inappropriate.
We will carefully consider every moderation decision and in some cases we may ask members to be tolerant of other people's views and ways of expressing themselves.
The community managers reserve the right to take steps or implement measures that we think will benefit the community as a whole.
Safety and wellbeing
If you are worried about the safety and wellbeing of a member of the community, or someone they care for, please get in touch with us at firstname.lastname@example.org
We take all mentions of intention to commit suicide, assisted suicide or self-harm very seriously. We will get in touch directly with the person to offer guidance. Suicidal posts will be removed from FamilyHub.
If you, or another user, needs urgent help, you can get in touch with Samaritans 24/7 by calling 116 123.
Mencap’s community team is not able to offer medical advice.
We know it can be tempting to offer advice when you want to help someone, but offering medical information or advice can be really dangerous, especially if you don't know someone's medical history. Please don't offer medical advice on FamilyHub; if someone needs help it's better to suggest that they talk to their GP.
By joining FamilyHub you’re agreeing to us storing the details you provide.
Your data will be securely controlled and all processing will be undertaken in accordance with and as permitted by the requirements of data protection law.
By joining FamilyHub you allow us to email you with information that you require to login and use FamilyHub – this includes welcome emails and emails that let you create and reset your password.
You may get a direct message from another member of the online community, including the moderators. Any registered user can message another user.
You also allow us to email you about the online community with news that we hope you'll find useful. You can change these email preferences at any time, but when you first register you will be set up to receive emails:
- to let you know when someone has messaged you.
- to let you know when someone quotes you, replies to you or mentions you in their post.
- each week (if you are not active on the community) to let you know what you have missed
These online community emails all have an unsubscribe option. You can also unsubscribe from these emails at any time when you are logged into FamilyHub. Here are instructions about how to change your email preferences.
Marketing news from Mencap
When you register there is also the option to receive wider email marketing news from Mencap. You can go to your profile on the website to further manage your preferences.
What you share
Remember that FamilyHub is a public community, and anyone can see what you write. We therefore recommend you choose a username that does not identify you personally. For more information about staying online, visit Stay Safe Online.
To help promote FamilyHub to as many parents as possible, we will sometimes use what's written on our community to help us market our work and promote what we do. We'll always do this anonymously, removing any names or identifiable details from what we use.
Updates to our terms and conditions
We have the right to update and change our House Rules and Terms and Conditions at any time.
