Help us change society
Everything we do is about supporting the rights of people with a learning disability.
All our campaign work focuses on getting equal rights and opportunities for people with a learning disability, and tackling discrimination.
Here are some of the major areas we’re working on currently.
Treat me well
We've launched a new health campaign called Treat me well!
Over the next 3 years we'll be campaigning alongside people with a learning disability, family members and carers to improve the quality of healthcare people with a learning disability get in hospital.
We are challenging cuts to vital services and support for people with a learning disability, both at a local and national level. This includes everything from protecting day centres for people with a learning disability from closure, to providing support to people who’ve had their entitlements cut, and campaigning to stop cuts to short breaks to make sure families don’t reach breaking point. Are you concerned by cuts happening in your local area? If so, find out how you can campaign locally.
In 2011 BBC Panorama exposed shocking levels of abuse of people with a learning disability at the now closed Winterbourne View care home in Bristol. Since then Mencap and the Challenging Behaviour Foundation have been working with families to get people with a learning disability moved out of similar treatment units and back to their local communities, where they can get appropriate support and care, near their family and friends. As part of the campaign, Mencap and the CBF produced the Out of Sight report in 2011 and Winterbourne View: the scandal continues in 2014, which looked at the unacceptable treatment many people with a learning disability have experienced.
Since then, big promises have been made. NHS England has committed to closing 35-50% of inpatient beds by March 2019. Together with the CBF, we continue to campaign with families to make sure this happens.
