On your marks…get set…it’s official! Mencap Northern Ireland has been announced as the official charity partner for Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon for the next three years!
It’s the first time a charity partnership of this kind has been agreed for more than one year and it comes at a very exciting time for Mencap in Northern Ireland.
Margaret Kelly, Director of Mencap in Northern Ireland, believes;
For Mencap in Northern Ireland, this charity partnership with Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon is beyond exciting.
Whether participants decide to run the full marathon, take part in the fun run, the eight mile walk, the wheelchair challenge or the relay race - please do it for Mencap!
You have a great opportunity to help children and young people with a learning disability and every penny raised by those taking on a marathon challenge for Mencap will stay in Northern Ireland.
In January 2016, the new Mencap Centre will open its doors and will provide state of the art, purpose built facilities for children with a learning disability and their families.
But building the new centre is just the beginning of what Mencap would like to achieve in Northern Ireland.
Margaret Kelly said:
Opening our new Mencap Centre is just the first step – we want to create and launch new services to reach even more children with a learning disability across Northern Ireland.
This centre could not have been built without the generosity of local people and, once again, we ask them to take a big step forward, take on the marathon challenge and ‘do it for Mencap!’
Mencap in Northern Ireland plans to launch a new family support service, ensuring that when any child is born with a learning disability, their family knows where to turn for information, advice and guidance.
Extra early intervention services are also planned, giving more children with a learning disability a better start in life and there will also be more community programmes on offer, such as after school clubs, summer play schemes and respite days.
