I found out about Mencap three years ago and joined their employment programme to see what they were about and what they do.
I have had a few placements with Mencap which helped me to find out what type of job I would like. In August 2014, I started a placement in Flame Restaurant which I really enjoyed and after a few months, I got a paid job there. Unfortunately, after changes in kitchen management, there were some job losses and my Employment Officer from Mencap helped me to look for another paid job. We both looked online to see what jobs were out there that could match my skills. My Employment Officer talked to Goodness Rocks Healthy Eating Coffee House on the Saintfield Road in Belfast and after a job trial, I got a paid position as a Kitchen Assistant.
I have been with Goodness Rocks for six months now and I feel that I am part of a team. I also took part in the fundraising event held by Goodness Rocks on the 27th August 2016 which raised £3,053.98 for Mencap’s new Centre.

''My Employment Officer is always on the phone with me if I need to speak to her. I feel as if I’ve learnt new tasks, performing them to the best of my ability, I work on my own and with others in the kitchen and really enjoy it.''
