My name is Ciara Evans and I am a member of the European Platform of Self Advocates for Inclusion Europe. I represent the UK. I am also Inclusion Europe’s self advocate representative on the Council of Inclusion International.
On Friday 30 September to Monday 3 October 2011 Inclusion Europe will be hosting a conference for Self Advocates called 'Hear Our Voices'.
This fantastic event is the first of its kind as it is being directed and run by self advocates with a disability.
The conference will take place in Peniche, Portugal. Peniche is a fisherman’s village which is 80km north of Lisbon.
Self advocates from all over Europe will come together to talk about their lives, their rights and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with a Disability.
For the 3 days, the self advocates will share experiences and come up with some messages for politicians and decision - makers.
These messages are really important because it will help us to help us to continue to campaign for change. It will also help us to improve the lives of people with a disability.
During the conference there will be workshops running. Some of these themes of the workshops are, access to health, how to campaign and use the media, Access to justice and legal capacity, Access to Employment, The Right to Marry and Have a Family and personal budgeting.
At the conference, I will be leading 3 interactive workshops about how self advocates can campaign and lobby and how they can use the media to tell their stories.
